How Much Milk Thistle Should a Woman Take?
The honest answer to how much milk thistle a woman should take is this: there is no separate female dose, and the number that matters is not the milligrams of milk thistle on the front of the bottle but the milligrams of standardised silymarin inside it. Most human research has clustered somewhere between about 140 mg and 600 mg of silymarin a day, usually split into two or three servings, and that is the range sensible UK products are built around. If you take nothing else from this page, take that one distinction, because it is the single thing that separates a well made milk thistle supplement from an expensive bottle of ground seed.

The short version
- What it is: milk thistle is Silybum marianum, a spiky purple-flowered member of the daisy family. The part used in supplements is the fruit, which most of us call the seed.
- The active fraction: silymarin, a group of about two dozen closely related flavonolignans. Silybin is the most abundant of them.
- Typical amounts: commercial preparations are commonly built to deliver somewhere around 420 to 600 mg of silymarin a day, and a great many studies used 140 mg three times daily.
- Is there a woman's dose? No. Trials have not set a sex-specific amount, and women have been included throughout the research at the same doses as men.
- One honest caution: if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescribed medicine, or you have a hormone-sensitive condition, this is a conversation to have with your GP or pharmacist before you start rather than after.
A seed with a very long history
Milk thistle has been growing around the Mediterranean for as long as anyone has been writing things down about plants, and it has been part of European herbal practice for the better part of two thousand years. The old herbals are full of it. The plant gets its name from the milky white veining on its leaves, and folk tradition tied that marbling to the liver long before anyone had isolated a single compound from the seed. That association is really why milk thistle is still on shelves today. People reach for it after a heavy few weeks, around a change of season, or simply as part of a routine they like, in the same spirit their grandmothers might have.
I find that history useful rather than decorative, because it explains the shape of the modern product. Traditional preparations used the crushed seed. Modern ones use a concentrated extract of the seed, and that shift is exactly where the dosing confusion comes from.
What is actually inside milk thistle
Crush a milk thistle seed and you get oil, protein, fibre and a small fraction of interesting polyphenols. That small fraction is silymarin. It is not one molecule. It is a family of structurally similar flavonolignans, and the European and United States pharmacopoeias both set out what the mixture should look like: roughly 40 to 65 per cent silybin A and B, 20 to 45 per cent silychristin and silydianin, and 10 to 20 per cent isosilybin A and B, with a dried extract expected to contain between about 30 and 65 per cent silymarin overall (Riasová and colleagues, 2021). Older analytical reviews found real-world milk thistle extracts varying anywhere from 40 to 80 per cent silymarin depending on growing conditions and geography (Mayer, Myers and Lee, 2005).
That variability is the whole reason standardisation exists. When a label says "standardised to 80 per cent silymarin", it is telling you that the extract has been made and tested to land at a known concentration, so that 200 mg of extract reliably carries around 160 mg of the actives rather than whatever this year's harvest happened to produce.

Why "500 mg of milk thistle" tells you almost nothing
Here is the trap, and it catches nearly everybody. Two bottles can both say 500 mg on the front and deliver wildly different amounts of the thing you are actually buying.
- 500 mg of milk thistle seed powder might contain somewhere in the region of 10 to 20 mg of silymarin, because the raw seed is mostly oil and fibre.
- 500 mg of a 30:1 extract standardised to 80 per cent silymarin delivers about 400 mg of silymarin.
Same number on the front. Roughly twenty times the difference in what reaches you. So when someone asks me how much milk thistle to take, my first question back is always the same: how much silymarin does your product actually give you per serving, and does the label tell you? If it does not say, you cannot answer the dosing question at all, and I would put that bottle down.

The amounts used in research
What the older herbal monographs suggested
The German Commission E, the expert committee that assessed herbal preparations for the German market and whose monographs still shape a lot of European practice, described 100 to 200 mg of silymarin taken two or three times a day (Mayer, Myers and Lee, 2005). That lands you at roughly 200 to 600 mg a day, split across the day rather than taken in one go. Most modern UK products sit inside that window, and the split-dosing habit has stuck for a good reason, which I will come to under absorption.
What modern trials have used
A 2024 narrative review of the pharmacology put the commonly suggested daily amount at 420 to 600 mg depending on the formulation, and noted that a 140 mg dose taken three times a day has been used in the majority of clinical investigations (Jaffar and colleagues, 2024). A dose-response meta-analysis pooling 41 randomised controlled trials found the doses studied ranged from about 150 mg to 800 mg a day, across trials lasting from a couple of weeks to nearly two years, in participants aged 18 to 67 (Mohammadi and colleagues, 2024).
Higher amounts have been formally tested. An ascending-dose phase I study gave 140, 280, 560 or 700 mg every eight hours for a week, taking the top group to 2.1 grams a day, and reported no drug-related adverse events, with the pharmacokinetics turning out to be non-linear rather than neatly proportional to dose (Hawke and colleagues, 2011). A later 48-week randomised trial comparing 420 mg and 700 mg three times daily against placebo found no significant difference in adverse events between the groups and concluded the higher amounts were safe and well tolerated (Navarro and colleagues, 2019).
Two things are worth saying plainly about all of that. First, those higher-dose studies were run in clinical populations under medical supervision, not in healthy adults taking a food supplement, and they are useful here as safety and pharmacokinetic context rather than as a recommendation. Second, the same trials were largely inconclusive on the outcomes they were testing, and I would rather tell you that than quietly leave it out.

Is there a different amount for women?
This is the question the search brings people here for, so let me answer it directly rather than dance around it. No published dosing framework sets a separate amount for women. Milk thistle is not dosed by body weight, it has no reference nutrient intake the way iron or vitamin D do, and the trials above enrolled women and men together on identical protocols. The 2004 cytochrome P450 study I mention below, for example, ran six women and six men through the same 28-day supplementation at the same daily amount (Gurley and colleagues, 2004).
So a woman takes the same silymarin amount an adult man would. What genuinely does differ for some women is not the number, but the circumstances in which taking it at all needs a second thought.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There is not enough good safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding to say anything confident, and where there is not enough data the sensible default is to leave it. Do not start milk thistle while pregnant or nursing without speaking to your midwife, GP or pharmacist first. You will sometimes see milk thistle discussed in a breastfeeding context in herbal folklore. That is tradition, not evidence, and it is not a reason to self-prescribe.
Hormone-sensitive conditions
Some laboratory work has looked at whether silymarin components interact with oestrogen receptors. This is early, cell-level science and it does not translate into a statement about what a capsule does in a person. Still, if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, or you are on tamoxifen, HRT or hormonal contraception, that is a good reason to run milk thistle past your GP or pharmacist before adding it rather than assuming a herb is automatically neutral.
Anyone taking prescribed medicine
Not woman-specific, but worth putting here because it comes up constantly. Speak to your pharmacist if you take anything regularly. The reassuring news is under cautions further down.
Form by form, and what each one really delivers
- Standardised extract tablets or capsules. The only form where you can actually calculate your intake, because the label states the extract ratio and the silymarin percentage. This is what nearly all the research used.
- Whole seed powder capsules. Traditional, honest enough, but very dilute. You would need an implausible number of capsules to reach the amounts used in studies.
- Tincture. Alcohol extracts more of the flavonolignans than water does, but concentrations vary enormously between producers and few state a silymarin figure, so you are dosing by drops and hope.
- Tea. Lovely ritual, negligible delivery. Because silymarin is poorly water soluble, milk thistle teas have been estimated to carry only around 10 per cent of the seed's silymarin into the cup (Mayer, Myers and Lee, 2005). Enjoy it as a drink. Do not count it as your dose.
Absorption, and why milk thistle is a fussy molecule
Silymarin is lipophilic and poorly water soluble, which is a polite way of saying your gut does not find it easy. Estimates put absorption of an oral silymarin extract at somewhere around 20 to 50 per cent, with rapid conjugation and mainly biliary excretion, giving a short half-life of roughly six hours (Jaffar and colleagues, 2024; Mayer, Myers and Lee, 2005). That short half-life is precisely why the monographs and the trials both split the daily amount into two or three servings instead of one large morning dose. One serving does not keep levels up for a whole day.
It is also why formulation is not a marketing detail. Micronisation and phospholipid complexing were both developed specifically to get more silymarin across the gut wall, and newer laboratory work on silybin cocrystals reported a sixteen-fold increase in bioavailability in rats compared with raw silybin extract (Zhu and colleagues, 2025). That is animal work, so read it as direction of travel rather than a promise, but the principle holds across the category: for poorly soluble botanicals, how the extract is made changes what you actually receive. How to take it: timing, food and how long
My practical advice, for what it is worth after years of being asked:
- Split the day. If your product allows it, two servings beats one, for the half-life reason above.
- Take it with food. A meal containing some fat suits a lipophilic compound better than a glass of water on an empty stomach, and it is gentler on the digestion.
- Be boringly consistent. Almost every trial in the meta-analysis ran for weeks or months, not days. If you are going to try it, give it a proper run rather than three scattered capsules.
- Do not creep the amount up. More is not automatically better, and the pharmacokinetics are not linear anyway, so doubling your capsules does not double what you absorb.

Why milk thistle is so often paired with dandelion and artichoke
You will rarely find milk thistle sold entirely on its own in the UK, and there is a botanical logic to the usual companions rather than pure marketing. Dandelion is another member of the daisy family and has its own long run in European folk practice, which is why the two have travelled together in herbals for centuries. Globe artichoke brings cynarin and other caffeoylquinic acids, a different polyphenol group entirely. One practical consequence of combination products: they can make the silymarin arithmetic harder, because a "1,500 mg herbal blend" figure tells you nothing about the split. Look for the per-ingredient breakdown.
How to read a UK milk thistle label in thirty seconds
- Species and part. It should say Silybum marianum and it should say seed or fruit.
- Extract ratio. Something like 30:1, meaning 30 parts raw seed condensed into one part extract.
- Standardisation. A stated silymarin percentage, commonly 80 per cent.
- Silymarin per serving in milligrams. The number that actually answers your dosing question. If it is absent, the product is not letting you compare.
- Servings per day. So you can work out the daily total rather than the per-tablet total.

A few cautions worth knowing
Milk thistle has a good tolerability record across a lot of trials. The most commonly reported effects are mild and digestive: loose stools, a bit of nausea, occasional bloating, usually settling if you take it with food. Beyond that:
- Daisy family allergy. Milk thistle sits in the Asteraceae family alongside ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds and daisies. If you react to those, avoid it.
- Medication interactions. The reassuring finding is that a controlled study in twelve healthy volunteers taking milk thistle for 28 days found no meaningful effect on CYP1A2, CYP2D6, CYP2E1 or CYP3A4 activity, the main drug-metabolising enzymes, concluding that milk thistle appears to pose minimal risk for that kind of herb-drug interaction (Gurley and colleagues, 2004). That is genuinely good news, but it is one study in twelve people and it does not cover every medicine, so please still check with your pharmacist.
- Blood glucose. Some trials in people with type 2 diabetes have looked at glucose markers. If you take glucose-lowering medication, mention milk thistle to your diabetes team rather than adding it quietly.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Not without professional advice, as above.
- Existing liver conditions. If you have a diagnosed liver problem, this belongs in a conversation with your GP or specialist. A food supplement is not a substitute for medical care, and any persistent symptom deserves a proper assessment rather than a capsule.
What to realistically expect
I would rather be straight with you here. Milk thistle is not a supplement that announces itself. There is no evening where you feel it kick in. The research base, for all its volume, is genuinely mixed, and the larger and better-controlled the trial, the more modest the findings have tended to be. What milk thistle offers is a well-characterised plant extract with a very long history of use and a good tolerability record, taken consistently as part of a routine. If a brand promises you more than that, be suspicious of the brand rather than the plant.

Trials have typically run for eight to twelve weeks or longer, so this is not a supplement to judge after a few days. Give it a consistent run of a couple of months and reassess.
Can I take milk thistle every day?
Daily use is how it has been studied, including in trials lasting many months, and tolerability has generally been good. If you take prescribed medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a diagnosed health condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
Does milk thistle tea count towards the dose?
Not really. Silymarin does not dissolve well in water, and teas have been estimated to carry only about 10 per cent of the seed's silymarin. Enjoy the tea, but count your capsules separately.
What should I look for on the label?
Species and plant part, extract ratio, standardisation percentage, milligrams of silymarin per serving, and servings per day. Anything that only gives you a total herbal blend weight is making comparison impossible.
